Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00007](Deadly Vices, Book Three)

By Kristine Cayne

Release Date: July 21, 2014

An Afghan woman’s rights activist with a dark secret.

Azita Seraj, doctor and women’s rights activist in Afghanistan, is horrified to learn that her late husband’s brother, Khalid Mullazai, is giving his eleven-year-old niece to a militant warlord. Desperate to save the girl, she reaches out to the only hope she has: an American soldier she treated several years earlier for a near-fatal gunshot wound. A wound he received in an ambush she’d unwittingly initiated. Can she enlist his aid and still keep secret her betrayal?

An American soldier searching for answers.

Kaden Christiansen never forgot the beautiful Afghan doctor who saved his life, and when he receives her cry for help, he doesn’t hesitate. He relishes the opportunity to see Azita again, and being in-country will give him a chance to hunt down the person responsible for the ambush that left one of his men dead.

A deadly conspiracy that threatens them both…

Pursued by Mullazai and the warlord’s fighters as they travel across the country disguised and posing as a married couple, Kaden and Azita begin to fall for their own act and for each other. But Kaden senses that Azita is holding back. Is the reason their cultural differences, or something darker?

Add it to your Goodreads TBR:

Azita laughed. “Well-said. My brother was expecting you to do the opposite of what I suggested.”

“To display your dominance, of course.”

A smile kicked up the edge of Kaden’s full lips. “I prefer to display my dominance in other ways.”

The growl in his voice had Azita’s body going up in flames. She fumbled to crack open the window, though it wouldn’t help. The heat was coming from deep inside her. With just a few words, Kaden had lit a fire in her belly, and now her imagination was running rampant.

What would it be like to have a man like him in her life, touching her, kissing her, making love to her? She had no knowledge of such things beyond the few hurried sessions with Faroukh, sessions that had left her achy and depressed. There had to be more. Attraction felt blissful. Why should sexual intercourse be otherwise?

This was my first time reading a book by Kristine Cayne. The story took place in Afghanistan with an Afghani female doctor as one of the main characters. That caught my attention and drew me into the story. Dr. Azita was strong, vulnerable, caring, and smart. She not only helped many in her clinic, but she contacted Kaden, the American she helped when he was injured while on military duty, when Laila, a young girl, was sent to marry a notorious warlord. Her gutsy behavior contrasted to that of the men around her. She risked everything, possibly being killed or stoned if she was caught by Khalid, while she was trying to rescue Laila from a fate worse than death.

Kaden returned with two of his friends after having been ambushed while in the army serving in Afghanistan two years ago. He is still on the lookout for whoever betrayed them and caused Sanchez to be killed. Azita saved Kaden’s life two years ago, but she has a secret she is keeping from him, and it’s questionable whether her brother, Shahram, can be trusted. I was absorbed by the suspenseful nature of the trip that was bound to fail, finding out about the deadly betrayal (was it upcoming or had it already happened two years ago?), the sexual tension between Kaden and Azita, and the unexpected humor. How would Kaden help Azita rescue Laila, and then take Azita back to Canada with him?

This was well-written with a real feel of being in Afghanistan (as I imagine it is), and that dreaded feeling of not being to quite trust anyone. As events unfolded, the action moved in directions I was not expecting. Every time I thought that it couldn’t get worse for Azita and Kaden, it did. The ultimate betrayal leads to the next story in the series and was a surprise. This is a suspense and a romance with some sexy scenes mixed in. I enjoyed this and would like to read more in this series.
