We all make them. But when is a mistake too big to forgive? What happens when the consequences of our mistakes are so disastrous, they cause excruciating pain to everyone we hold near and dear?

San Francisco’s Dr. Morgan Drake makes one mistake. One colossal mistake that could cost him everything and everyone he loves—including himself.

When interior designer, Zoë Drake sees small changes in her husband, her investigations point to a mammoth problem. The happy marriage and great relationship they share quickly begins to evaporate. What’s worse—it’s all happening when Zoë’s going through some changes of her own—at a time when she might need Morgan the most.

With a husband who is at times completely absent, a child who increasingly blames himself for his parents’ issues, and a cryptic call that introduces the element of danger and fear, Zoë will soon realize that there is a painful side of love. As their world falls apart, will there be anything that can secure their bond, or will this chapter of their lives come to a catastrophic end?

The Painful Side of Love is a follow-up novella to Rebecca Rohman’s romantic suspense novel, Love M.D. If you like romance with steam, a huge injection of suspense and being taken on a roller-coaster of emotions, then this novella is for you.

The mistake tore at my heart. This after the HEA (happily ever after) novella allowed me to see what happens when the unthinkable happens, and a happily married couple is torn apart. Unforgivable. Unforgettable. There is no way to make it right. This focuses on the doctor’s POV, though some of the POVs for the affected family is included.

His wife only wanted to know what happened, but she was shut out. He was shut down and then disappeared. If he could not forgive himself, how could she love him anymore? How could the family forgive him? Then it was about the children. How it was revealed to Zoe and then to Adrian maximized the heartbreak.

Morgan pushes away Zoe, his wife, and his son, Adrian, as he attempts to deal with a mistake that cost the life of a child and the friendship of the child’s parents. There is added suspense because of the phone call that distracted him. He had wondered whether his mother had been killed, and now there was a phone call from an unknown caller. Zoe got a call from a man claiming to know the killer. The mystery intensified.

I was absorbed in the sadness and disturbed by Morgan’s guilt and shame. Could one mistake wipe out all the good he had done and could do? This was the kind of loss that tears marriages apart. Nine years later, their love is tested harshly. They can never go back to where or who they used to be. The dual POV works well to reveal the struggle from both Morgan and Zoe.

This is my favorite of the series, despite the disturbing story line, because of the theme of forgiving the unforgivable. Tragedy happened and mistakes were made, but forgiveness is important to keep more tragedy from occurring. And just when I thought that I knew where it was going, the author hit me with a surprise. I was reeling at the final secret that was revealed and how Morgan chose to deal with it. The title captures the theme well.

The cover doesn’t have anything to do with the story and is not effective, in my opinion.

Note: This book is a sequel to Love M.D., and a story line started in that book continues in this one. Also, I originally read this as an ARC (advance reader copy), but 1-clicked a copy afterwards.
