(Characters are a work of fiction)
When you close your eyes and open them again you expect to see the world as it was a fraction of a second ago. Maybe a slight change from a passing breeze, but you are still in the same place, unmoving and unchanged.
You don’t expect to be somewhere else where the faces are unfamiliar. Where you are unfamiliar.
With one blink I had no family, no home, no name, and no past. I was alone, until I met the Reilly brothers. They gave me purpose again.
A reason to trust. A reason to love. A reason to rebuild a life full of forgotten memories. Together, they would try to rewrite my history.

“I don’t fuck around, just so you know.”

“And nor do I, just so you know,” he said in an even voice.

I glared at him. I supposed it was possible that this was all gossip. Yet he was so sexy and handsome, and ridiculously successful, not to mention loaded, and I knew women were throwing themselves at him any chance they got. I eyed him warily.

“Anyway, you’re still in love with your late wife,” I added, like a petulant child asking for someone else’s share of candy.

“What do you mean by that, Janie?”

“I mean what I say, that you’re in love with her.”

“And if that were to be true, why should it affect you?”

“It would make it complicated for the film.”

“Ah, I see. So my being ‘in love’ with my wife would affect your decision about whether to take the role of Sylvie or not?”

His words cut me. The way he laid it out so . . . so . . . blatantly made me look like an ingénue idiot. He had a point. I was a professional actress and I was being absurd. I could feel my lips pouting—I had no answer to his question.

“Are you jealous?” he asked.

My fake laugh would have fooled any audience, and I hoped Daniel too. “How can I possibly be jealous?”

“You’re answering my question with a question.” He lowered his voice and said in a sensual whisper,

“Are you jealous, Janie? Does the idea of my loving someone else torment you?” He brushed my lip with his thumb.

I felt a lump gather in my throat and my eyes flood until they burned. Hot tears slid down my cheek. Talk about wearing your heart on your sleeve. And my heart was like fragile glass.

“I thought so.” He smirked a little. What a bastard! He was getting off on this! Having me so desperately into him while he still held a flame for Natasha freaking Jürgen!

I turned my face away from him so he couldn’t humiliate me any further, but he held me by the jaw and forced me to look at him, unbuckling his seatbelt, getting down on his knees so he was kneeling in front of me. The fact that the plane hadn’t stabilized didn’t deter him.

“Look into my eyes,” he demanded. “Look at me, Janie, and tell me how you really feel.”

I was blubbing now. The pathetic little student in love with her teacher, the lapdog who would follow her master off a cliff. Why can’t I be stronger than that?

“Are you in love with me, Janie?” He unbuckled my seatbelt and, at the same time his hand brushed across my belly, his fingers feeling for my flesh, his touch light. I let him continue, too weak to protest, too stunned by his cruelty at causing me to fall apart.

“Are you in love with me, Janie,” his echo murmured into my mouth—not even saying it as a question, but as a statement—his hand reaching inside my jeans and slipping down under the thin fabric of my panties. I gasped. His tongue found my mouth, prying my lips apart.

“No,” I whimpered into his mouth, “I’m not.”

Excerpt

Tanner started his riff, Johnny and Bex coming in as Bex began to sing, effectively silencing the crowd. In between her notes I could hear shouts from exuberant fans. My head cleared and it was just me on this stage with the most amazing band I could have ever asked for.

It was my turn to come in and come in I did. I took it over, allowing the screams and shouts of my name to fuel me to drum harder, faster, longer. When my solo was over and Bex began singing again, the screams were still reverberating in my head.

Before I knew it, April and her dad were walking onto the stage as we finished up our tenth song. Sweat dripped off of my face and into my shirt, which looked like I’d taken a shower in it. Before I could stop myself, I stood up and met her halfway across the stage. I held up my drum sticks, which started a frenzy in the crowd. They knew what I was doing. They were seasoned groupies.

April’s eyes met mine as she realized I was walking up to her. That same charge traveled through my body. I handed her the drumsticks without saying a word. The crowd went insane. I could see many flashes as people took pictures, but it didn’t bother me. She beamed as she took the sticks from my hands, her fingers brushing mine. I almost jumped back at her touch but forced myself to take one step back instead.

“Did you see this?” April boomed into the microphone. “Beau just gave me his drumsticks! Who is jealous right now?” The crowd screamed, jumping up and down. She looked back over at me and beamed.

I was frozen behind her. I felt Bex, Johnny, and Tanner come up and stand behind us and I immediately relaxed.

“We wanted to take a moment to thank you for coming to this Jaded Regret concert to benefit Young Angels Children’s Hospital, which you can see behind us. Because of all of your generosity, not only will we get to complete the next phase, but we will also get to help many foster kids that have aged out of the system but still need assistance. Thanks to Bexley Bryant-Gibbons, we’ll be assisting her in funding an assisted living facility here in Orlando for kids who have aged out of the system. It will help them with finding jobs, giving them life skills, and help them have a safe and low cost place to live.”

Bex stepped up next to April. “Thank you, Orlando,” she said, her voice gruff through her headset. “Most of you know that I have a special place in my heart for kids in the foster care system, especially those who never got to have families and aged out of the system. It’s my goal to help those that need it and get more kids families.” The crowd screamed and jumped up and down. Bex looked back at me for just a second, but I knew what the look meant. For kids like us who had no one. “Now who’s ready to rock?”

Bex nodded at us and we turned to go back to our respective places.

April put her hand on my arm before I could get too far from her. “Thank you,” she whispered into my ear. “I’ll keep them forever.” I allowed a small smile to play on my lips before turning away from her. I grabbed a new pair of drumsticks and watched as she exited the stage. She turned back and stood, watching me the entire time again.I wasn’t sure what I was doing, but I could still feel where she’d touched me on my arm.

Twists, mental illness, and finding love when everything seems lost is at the heart of this story. Beau is the damaged, emotionally abused drummer of Jaded Regret, a rock band. As a young child, he discovered his father’s dead body after his father had committed suicide. As if that was not traumatic enough, his mother later abandoned him in a mental institute after emotionally abusing him. Thankfully, his sister, Natalie, never left his side when they were foster kids. Beau has survived, but inside he still hears his mother’s harsh words against him.

The author was wise to have both Beau’s and April’s POVs included in the story. It really helped to have Beau’s thoughts and feelings revealed, as he was often shut down around others. That would have made him seem cold and aloof and thus, hard to sympathize with. Instead I got an inside view to Beau’s struggles with mental illness, recovering from abuse, and trying desperately to cope with life. I enjoyed having April’s viewpoint as well as I sympathized with her and saw her as more than a privileged woman. She worked hard and cared deeply about being a social worker and assisting foster children.

Then there was Robbie, who was out of control and silent. He was a new foster kid that the system had no room for. He had been in and out of the foster system, and now his mother had died of an overdose. He was so young to be left alone in life. My heart went out for him. He was the personal story of a foster kid that brought home the plight of unwanted kids in a system that often tries to sedate children, rather than take the time to connect with their pain.

In the midst of this, Beau and April fall for each other. I really liked that they had the same amount of limited experience with the opposite sex. Beau was not a manwhore; what a relief! There were explicit, sizzling sex scenes in the story, but it was also romantic.

Then there was the rest of the band with the expected bad boy rocker, Tanner, the happily married Bex and Johnny, and the ever attentive Natalie, Beau’s sister. Bex and Johnny were a sexy married couple, who made being on the road with kids work. Tanner was the cliched manwhore. Natalie was so kind and loving to her brother with unfortunately bad taste in men because she was attracted to Tanner. I agreed with Beau: I don’t want her with him. She deserves the best.

This story revealed examples of foster kids and mental illness. The system is largely broken for foster kids, and I liked how it was dealt. Mental illness was shown and handled with prescription medicine and without. It’s not an in-depth look at either topic. It was enough for me learn a bit more about both and to have a new respect for the internal struggle of the mentally ill. Reading about Beau’s struggle to cope with life, to silence those voices in his head, and his feelings of unworthiness felt real. And I just wanted to hug the angry, confused, and hurt Robbie!

A solid story that kept me absorbed and involved. I would like to read more in this series; this was the first book I’ve read in it.

Note: I received an ARC for review purposes.

“Dax Sterling, your bail has been posted.”

The gargantuan man emerges from the dimly lit jail cell known as the tank. He ducks as he exits, peering around with one eye open. His thick arms shield his eyes from the light. To say he has a hangover may be the understatement of the century.

Chloe’s heart cringes when she catches sight of him. She recognized the last name and hoped to high hell, and even crossed all ten of her toes, that Sterling, Inc. wasn’t the Sterlings she once knew.

The Sterlings from Chloe’s past reside on the East Coast with their chain of nightclubs, and no way in hell did the group of brothers finally make it out here. Their roots are so deep in Jersey that Satan probably trims them when they invade his subterranean turf. Chloe smiles at the thought of the Sterlings and Satan, because in her book they go hand in hand. Leaving Eli and moving far away was the best decision she ever made.

She thought it was far enough until this morning. Dax was ahead of her in school by quite a few years and definitely hung out in a different crowd. The only reason she knows Dax so well is because of his younger brother, Eli. The boy who garnered her virginity and eventually shattered her heart into pieces.

Releasing her breath, she focuses on the paperwork in front of her and groans under her breath. She has one chance at a promotion, and it’s this deal. The bail money her boss sent with her is no chump change. Seidman Construction was more than willing to finance the project, and with millions already sunk into it, there’s no room for error.

All board members must be present at the meeting to finalize all the plans and sign legal documents. Chloe’s toes cringe in her black spikes. She’s still blown away by the fact she’s bailing out Dax Sterling. Clint’s personality is as dry as they come, and she thinks the cruel joke he is playing on her this morning is suspicious. The whole reality of the situation is priceless because it’s not a joke.

Four board members with the company name Sterling made Chloe a fucking fool for thinking it could’ve been anyone else. She ran from her past, and especially those boys, and now at the height of her career they’re the only ones standing in her way. Karma sure has a fucking funny way of saying ‘hello.’

Clint has been riding her ass all week about having the company’s ducks in a row, and then on the morning of the meeting she has to deal with this bullshit. Everything inside of her is dying to roundhouse the son of a bitch into a cold, unconscious state. His deep voice seeps into her concentration as she steadies the black pen and fills in all the boxes. He’s a charmer and working his magic on some lady officer behind Chloe.

Her blood pressure rises to an all-time high when she hears Dax’s familiar voice and old pick up lines trying to charm a few women guards. Chloe keeps her attention focused on the fine print, making sure to dot all of her i’s and cross her t’s.

The last time a Sterling saw Chloe she was a timid, bleached blonde teen. She’s morphed completely over the years into an opposite picture of what she left on the East Coast. Her hair is now long and raven black, nearly touching the middle of her back. There are no jeans and gym shoes littering her closet these days. No, only business dress suits, sexy blouses, and cocktail dresses adorn each hanger.

A few years back, her mom sent her a front page article in the local paper about the Sterling Brother who can’t control his own addiction. Her mother had sent the paper to show Chloe the article about her prize-winning squash, but the Sterling story held her attention hostage.

It didn’t surprise Chloe that Dax’s party boy personality went from consuming large amounts of alcohol to cocaine. And like always, Cole was the representative for the family, smoothing things over in the media. The man should’ve been a politician.

All Sterling boys were smooth talkers with the women, but Dax set the bar high. Their late father, heir to their fortune, made sure to pass down the trait to them. Even though all were adopted, they didn’t miss a beat of the arrogant, righteous Sterling persona.

Chloe passes over the check along with the paperwork that she was sure to double and triple check. A young, overweight male clerk scans the paperwork and sends an approving nod in her direction.

“He’s all yours.” Pudgy fingers push Chloe’s receipt back in her direction.

Her mind races, buzzing with fear of facing Dax and eventually the Sterling boy who left her in pieces. Chloe runs her palms down the front of her pinstriped dress suit. It wasn’t easy getting to the position she’s in, and by damn if she’ll let her past ruin it. She’s built companies from the ground up, and Seidman’s promised to throw her portfolio over the edge if only she could land them the job of their lives, and that was all in the Sterling Brothers’ hands.

“Dax.” Chloe’s shaky voice echoes in the waiting area.

The beast looks up to her and sends her a wicked grin.“Yes.” His dark brown eyes bore holes through her chest, and Chloe knows in this exact moment her fate has been sealed yet again by another fucking Sterling man.

Author Bio

I’m the wife of a most fabulous
man for twenty years.

• I’m a mother of 2 busy teens. • I’m a dog lover.

• I’m a serious drinker of coffee and wine.

• I live near New York City.

• My favorite place that I’ve visited is Monte Carlo.

• My favorite color is green (but I look best in pink/salmon).

• My favorite food is chocolate.

• My favorite kind of music is New Country.

I’ve always been a creative sort of person… I started with my college studies in Advertising Design and Illustration. I’m good at drawing and coming up with clever ideas.

As for story telling – well, that’s where I have the most fun! Ditching The Dream is my first novel, but I’ve been working on writing movies since, what seems like forever. Way back in high school my friend Aimee and I started writing a movie and I was hooked. We didn’t know what we were doing, but we loved coming up with the story. I also like to come up with stories about people I don’t know. Like the guy that cut me off on the expressway…He had quite a story – at least in my mind! Who knows? Maybe I’ve come up with a story about you! 😉 Ditching The Dream is a story that came to me while I was helping two author friends of mine. I was helping them with their books and I would make suggestions to amp up their stories along the way. Bev and Amy encouraged me to write my own story and Ditching The Dream was born. Is it auto-biographical? No, not in the least. But it sure has been a fun story to come up with (especially when my hubby gets involved with coming up with ideas).
