Excerpt – Opening Scene (SPOILER ALERT)

“Vous avez un cancer du sein.”

Translation: “You have breast cancer.” Four words no woman wants to hear.

It was on the night of the grand opening of my Paris hotel one week ago and after a long day, while taking a shower, I felt a small lump in my right breast.

After several tests and a biopsy, Dr. Benneteau, the oncologist called…

Days later, I still can’t get over the shock.

As I stare at the gray clouds that cover the Eiffel Tower, my phone rings, snapping me out of my thoughts. My husband Jonathan’s face illuminates my screen.

“Hey, baby. How are my two favorite men in the world?”

“Overwhelmed. I just had a break and I wanted to be sure I checked in with you. Any idea when you’re going to be home?”

Not anytime soon.

“Apart from seeing your handsome face and my sweet son for a couple days, I really can’t rationalize flying across the Atlantic for two days. I have to head over to Austria to make sure everything is on schedule with the property there.”

“I miss my wife, and Jordan misses his mom.”

My chest aches at the sound of his words. “If you really want, I’ll come home but it would be so much less pressure on me if I just stayed.”

He sighs at the end of the line and mumbles a disgruntled, “Okay.”

“It’s not like you’d have time for me either if I came, is it? You couldn’t even make the grand opening of Paris Bleu. All you’ve been telling me is how crazy it has been trying to get everything in place at the various branches of the firm.”

“That’s true. I just miss you that’s all. Things just seem so much easier to handle when you’re here.”

His words warm my heart. “I miss you too. I’ll be home as soon as I am able, I promise. In the meanwhile we always have FaceTime. But don’t you ever forget how much I love you.”

“I love you too, babe. I have to go. I’ll be in touch soon.”

I end the call.

I may not have gotten over the shock of my diagnosis, but from the moment I found the lump, I’ve spent all my time researching it, and I have another appointment with the doctors this afternoon.

Jonathan’s been overwhelmed of late since his sister Megan moved to Switzerland and his right-hand man, Cooper, lost his wife after a battle with—breast cancer. I don’t want to worry him. Besides, it’s just stage two breast cancer…or at least that is what I continue to tell myself.

I have already made up my mind about what I’m going to do—handle it on my own. Have a double mastectomy so this never ever resurfaces again and tell my husband when I get home. That way, the problem will be handled; they’ll see that I’m healthy and we can all just move on with our lives. I’ll be saving them the agony of going through this anyway…

Love M.D. Synopsis

As an accomplished interior designer in San Francisco’s Bay Area, Zoë Jenkins is used to transforming empty spaces into masterpieces. She leaves little square footage in her personal life for anything outside of her thriving business and a renewed relationship with her twin brother. After a decade spent ripped apart by circumstance and an entire ocean’s distance, she depends on no one but him. Until a sexy surgeon walks into her life.

Although Zoë can’t deny her attraction to the charming and benevolent Morgan Drake, he’s on her mental list of everything she should avoid. Past experience taught Zoë that dating clients compromises business. Add a not-yet-dissolved marriage to the mix and Doctor Hottie is definitely Doctor Off-limits.

Dr. Morgan Drake is surprised at the undeniable chemistry he feels when he’s in the same room as Zoë. The strikingly beautiful and solitary designer he hired to fill his new-start, new-city home makes it abundantly clear there will never be anything between them. But twelve years of medical school breeds persistence. He sets out to persuade the pants off Zoë Jenkins and show her what her empty spaces are missing.

Intense passion and amazing sex have a way of masking secrets—secrets that unravel a dangerous web of fraud, corruption and conspiracy that turn Zoë’s quiet spaces into a world where nothing is as it seems. With her life on the line, the good doctor responsible for her fiercest betrayal might just be the only one worthy of her finest interior masterpiece—this time, of her heart.

After a bit of a slow start, I found that the romance and suspense picked up nicely. Viv (Vivian) meets Ike at The Skipper, and for the first time in many years, allows a man into her life in a sexual way. She is determined to be independent at 35 years old and avoids intimate relationships with men. The men in her life now are like brothers to her, safe and protective. Ike is about to change her mind.

Her domestic violence situation that she thought she had left in the past and on another coast has come back to haunt her. I appreciated that she was one of those women who stayed in the relationship and causes us to rail against her. So easy to judge unfairly. As the she reveals why she stayed, it makes some sense.

Then Ike has his own past secret. And there is a hint of another issue hidden/ denied by Viv. What happened prior to the domestic violence relationship? This is revealed in a way that makes the most sense.

Her father is experiencing dementia or Alzheimer’s and can no longer be taken care of by his wife of 50 years. This brings all of her brothers back for a bit and allow her a second chance with them. This story is about re-connecting with family, allowing your friends into your life a bit more, and falling for a very sexy guy (42 y/o).

There are quite a few sexy, erotic scenes as well as action scenes where Viv proves just how capable she is of handling anything that threatens her… with some help by Ike, Gunnar, Syd, Pam, and others. She went from being isolated, ashamed, and hurt to having amazing people there for her. The importance of remembering the past, going pasting coping into healing, and making room for love made this book a bit stronger and memorable for me.

Note: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I have read another book by this author and have purchased her Cedar Tree box set as well.

New! Hooked Up # 1, by Arianne Richmonde

Hooked Up #1 Links

I believed in sex, once upon a time. And passion. But now my life as a single, divorced career girl living alone in New York City was all about work. I hadn’t had a date in years.

But then he came along . . . Alexandre Chevalier. The French CEO billionaire of HookedUp, the social media phenomenon that had taken the world by storm.

He was the most beautiful man I’d ever seen, and with eyes so green they seared into my soul.

Like a flash of lightning he struck me down . . . his touch was electric, and I knew my life was irrevocably changed. I’d never be the same again.

He awakened every fiber of my being, ignited every cell in my body.
And just when I thought things couldn’t be more perfect . . .
It all came crashing down.

I’d had it with all the crazy women in my life: the models, the movie stars, even my power-hungry sister and business partner. If you’d had a past like mine, you’d understand.

I just wanted a normal relationship with a normal woman . . .

And then I met her . . . Pearl Robinson.
She was perfect for me.
Or so I thought.
But I was in for a shocking surprise when I found out the truth . . .
Of who she really was.

HOOKED UP is a series of three, full-length novels averaging 300+ print pages each, to be released at intervals of one month and three weeks.

Disclaimer: If your e-reader should melt while reading this series, the author cannot be held responsible.

Pearl fans take note: this is a new, re-edited version of the Pearl books, told in dual POV throughout. The series is primarily for NEW readers, or those who would like to immerse themselves, once again, in Pearl and Alexandre’s passionate love story, so please do not expect a new storyline.

Hooked Up #1 released December 28, 2015
Hooked Up #2 coming January 26, 2016
Hooked Up #3 coming Valentine’s Day 2016

I was a bit cautious as I was reading this re-told, dual POV version of Shades of Pearl. Having Alexandre’s POV allowed me to know things that only he would know, and Pearl might not yet have found out. I felt as if I were in on the secret. I found myself laughing out loud at some scenes, highlighting others, and swooning a bit at the very sexy scenes.

I liked getting to know the insecure, 40 y/o American divorcee, Pearl, as she fibs her way to meeting Alexandre and his sister, Sophie, at the cafe. She does some immature things, but she is endearing. I can appreciate her confusion, self-deception, and desire for Alexandre. His thoughts about her and his seduction of her had me both amused and very interested. He’s both naughty and mature for his age.

His tests, the official date, and then the gifts… Ah! Alexandre knows how to treat a woman well. But there is also more to him and his past. Bits and pieces are teased out with us knowing a bit more than Pearl. What really happened with his family? How did Hooked Up really get started?

This is more than just a hot, sexy romance. It is a story with layers, secrets, and two people who are wary of trusting anyone, much less falling in love. They second guess themselves and each other. They fit perfectly and awkwardly. And then there is that cliffhanger ending. I’m looking forward to reading book 2! And I really like Hooked Up as the title. It fits.

I enjoyed the Pearl series, which included Alexandre’s POV in books 4 & 5. With this re-telling of the series with both Pearl’s and Alexandre’s POV, I found it to be a bit slower in the beginning. It took me a bit to get used to going back and forth. As the story continued, I found myself looking forward to getting both sides of the story. The different interpretations and even musings behind their actions made it seem a bit more real and feasible. Also, they each remembered the dialog differently, just like in reality, where what you think the other person said might not be accurate.

Note: I received an ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Review: Legally Undead by Margo Bond Collins

Book Blurb:
Elle Dupree has her life all figured out: first a wedding, then her Ph.D., then swank faculty parties where she’ll serve wine and cheese and introduce people to her husband the lawyer.

But those plans disintegrate when she walks in on a vampire sucking the blood from her fiancé Greg. Horrified, she screams and runs–not away from the vampire, but toward it, brandishing a wooden letter opener.

As she slams the improvised stake into the vampire’s heart, a team of black-clad men bursts into the apartment. Turning around to face them, Elle discovers that Greg’s body is gone—and her perfect life falls apart.

Legally Undead Margo Bond Collins

Now that I have read Legally Undead, I have found another very good book by this author. This has a fresh twist on vampire hunters/killers. Elle is a fun, feisty, kick-ass female who, after losing her fiancé to a vampire, kills one and discovers a terrible secret about her fiancé. That secret leads to an adventure of vampire killing training, meeting Nick and his team, learning the ‘truth’ about vampires, and discovering that she is more than capable of rescuing her friend, Malcolm. In doing so, she bravely faces Deirdre, head vampire.

I laughed, cringed, got caught up in the story. I am not a fan of vampire stories, but I was open because I had read Waking Up Dead by Margo Bond Collins and had enjoyed her fresh twist on a murdered ghost detective. This offered a good twist on a vampire hunter and how to hunt them. Elle rocked. I enjoyed reading about her humorous POV.

I will warn that because of the killing there is violence described in this book. It is not graphic, but descriptions of the fights and killings are included and increase as the story gets nearer to the end.

There is one vampire that she didn’t kill that I was totally pissed off with her for not doing so. How could she let him get away … again?! The story is skillfully told, and just when I think I know what will happen, the author throws in an unhappy surprise followed by a very good one. This does seem to be the start of a good, suspenseful series. I’m curious where it will go from here.

“Have I mentioned how much it sucks (no pun intended) to be hunted by a vampire? Ruins your whole day.

And your whole life, if you’re not careful.

I’d already lost one boyfriend to the vampires, I wasn’t going to lose another, even if he wasn’t actually my boyfriend.

So only one question remained: how do you break up with an un-boyfriend?”

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars Aviary Photo_130483242079135333
